Mike Schoeppach is a certified mediator, trainer, and author. His specialty is labor relations, including collective bargaining and employee involvement processes. With over 30 years experience in the public sector, including extensive involvement on both sides of the table, Mike is a successful trainer in the areas of interest-based bargaining, effective conflict management, group process and consensus decision-making, and employee involvement processes. Mike served as the Director of Labor Relations for the City of Seattle from 1998 until his retirement on July 1, 2005. As Director, Mike managed the Labor Relations Division of the Personnel Department and developed labor relations strategy and policy recommendations to the Mayor and City Council associated with the City's negotiations and contract administration for twenty-four collective bargaining agreements covering thirty-one bargaining units. During his term, he oversaw the development and implementation of an initiative to re-centralize the City's labor relations processes. Prior to assuming the Director's position, Mike was a professional staff representative for public educators in Washington State for twenty-five years. The last eighteen of those years, Mike served as Executive Director for the Bellevue Education Association in Bellevue, Washington. In his capacity as a representative of public educators, Mike bargained scores of collective bargaining agreements and represented his members in numerous grievance and arbitration hearings. He served as a consultant for both labor and management in the areas of employee involvement programs, educational reform and interest-based bargaining.
